National Carers Week 2016

In honour of Carer’s who are at the heart of everything that happens
in a family that has a child with Autism.

Today I would like to share some valuable information that comes from the heart…

With National Carers Week taking place in Australia from the 16-22 October 2o16 I felt it was a great time to share some of my thoughts on being a Carer and the impact that it has on the individual and family…

Being a Carer is not an easy task.  Yes, it’s something you do, even though you may not always want to…  It’s  a job that is often 24/7 juggling everything, which leads to little time for you…  Something that in the desire to provide the best for your child is often forgotten.  Being a carer you tend to become very focused on ensuring your child is provided for in the best way possible, while failing to acknowledge your needs as a Woman, Wife and Mum, or as Man, Husband and Dad let alone the needs of your other children… Life becomes quite demanding and I often see and read about parents that don’t know which way to turn to achieve what they need, let alone that feeling like you are doing it all alone… The people that you used to connect with no longer understand your world is very different then it was before and the parenting skills you thought you had have been thrown out the door…

The autism journey is not for the faint hearted
and definately one many would not choose
without having greater understanding,
but this is not the case for all of us, as this path was chosen for us.

I suffered from regular headaches, back pain, did not eat properly amongst other issues that were all related to emotional stress and situations related to my son,  running a household and past situations.  Things I am sure many of you will resonate with, as no matter where we come from whether it be separated families, abusive relationships, traumatic upbringing, a partner that’s in denial, a sole parent, blended families, a happy marriage we all come together as parents with a common interest, which is being in need of support and guidance as we Fear our child/rens future.

We fear failure in everything we do as we can’t take any more bad news. We fear the change that is needed to achieve what we need to. We fear what others may say about the decisions we make and our childs behaviours. We fear making the wrong choices and ultimately we Fear success as this is something we are no longer used to. No matter what your situation may be or where you are located I want you to know that the situation can be changed globally. Once I started to take time for me I discovered how valuable it was.  The benefits I have gained along with my family has been amazing.  It has changed the way I feel each day and view life as I know it along the way…

It’s a path that has given us a tour guide that will take us places we have never been and often places we never intended to go either, but at the end of the day our love for this child as their Mother, Father or Primary Carer will still be as great as any of our children. It’s about having the persistence, determination, courage, perseverance, will power, strength, endurance and patience to continue no matter what obstacles may appear… It’s knowing that you have your eyes set on a goal and when all the stars align – whatever they may be at the time that you will open the door to the opportunity you have been manifesting for some time…

Look at the potential beyond the current situation
in our beautiful children…

In all this there is something crucial I have learnt and had the pleasure of learning the hard way.  By taking care of me, my child gains dramatically as well as the rest of our family… With clarity I am able to focus on what is important and provide the best opportunities for our boy and make decisions that are beneficial for us all without it being as stressful. Something that looked very different when I was always tired and drained from keeping up with doing what I thought was right for our son based on what professionals had said, as this led to pure exhaustion but did I stop like I should, no I just kept going like everyone expected…

By understanding me and my emotional needs I have changed the way I feel daily. I have seen how this journey impacts us physically, mentally and emotionally and learnt how to transform this for the benefit of me firstly and then my family.  A world I could not see until major events in my life made me realise the impact it was having on my personal well-being…

This is why I am passionate about what I do and you can have all this too…  I feel that it is an area that needs more understanding and emphasis no matter where you are on this journey and with support and guidance you can discover your full potential, as well as the benefits of taking care of you and your Mental, Physical and Emotional Well-being too… You are at the heart of this journey and more important than you often realise which is why it’s now time to reward you with a gift for the amazing work that you do as a Carer who invests every possible moment in your child to assist them in achieving their potential…
